GORLESTON HOCKEY CLUB

CENTENARY EVENT 22ND AND 23RD MAY

Gorleston Hockey Club’s centenary celebrations concluded last weekend with a match at Cliff Park against a strong Norwich City X1 commemorating the first match played between the two Clubs in 1910. Following the game Gorleston Chairman Russ Crawford presented the Norwich side with a commemorative cup and reflected on the changes over the past 100 years, notably that the first match was between mixed players on grass and with very different rules.

Earlier on the Saturday over 50 players took part and many spectators enjoyed a 9 a side tournament with teams from Gorleston Under 30s Gorleston Over 30s Lowestoft Railway Gorleston Legends and Gorleston Veterans. In hot and sunny conditions it was predictable that the Gorleston Under 30s should eventually win the Centenary Shield awarded to the winner but there were notable games along the way, in particular 2 - 2 draw between the Legends and the Veterans and a 1 nil defeat of the Under 30s by the Over 30s.

Highlight of the weekend was the Dinner on Saturday Night in the Victory Suite of the Great Yarmouth Racecourse Conference Centre attended by 85 past and present members of the Hockey Club. Speakers were skipper Kevin MacDonald who gave a toast to the Club and presented outgoing Chairman Hugh Wiltshire with a special cut glass Vase marking his long service. Mr Wiltshire then reminisced on his past 50 years in the sport and the Gorleston Hockey Club in particular and proposed a toast to the guests. There was also a new special award the John Dawson Centennial Cup made to Russ Crawford for his work on behalf of the Club last season and an auction and raffle (including a Norwich City Shirt signed by the League One Champions) raised over £450 for Club funds.

25/04/10: CENTENARY EVENT

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of Gorleston Hockey Club and friends and associates past and present are invited join in our centenary celebrations on the 22nd and 23rd May. Whether you wish to play, watch or simply renew old acquaintances we have planned a weekend of hockey and entertainment especially for you. Both on Saturday and Sunday from 10.30 am to 4 pm on our Cliff Park Community Astro pitch we have Club and Invitation teams taking part in friendly rivalry and the highlight of our celebrations will be a Dinner Dance on the Saturday night in the Admiralty and Nelson Suites of the prestigious Great Yarmouth Race-course Conference Centre with music provided by the Centre's own DJ and Roadshow.

As for the hockey, in addition to individual selection if you wish to play on the Saturday, we have invited 4 Clubs with whom we have had a long association (Norwich City, Harleston Magpies, Lowestoft Railway and Norfolk Nomads) on Sunday to put in 9 man teams and play in a small league with our current squad. Because we want plenty of time to socialise all games will be reduced to 20 minute halves and refreshments will be available on both days in a marquee which the School have kindly permitted us to erect.

As for cost, the Dinner Dance will be £27.50 per head with dress DJs or smart casual and tie, whilst for the hockey (unless you are coming as part of a team squad) individual players will be asked to pay a £5 match fee to assist with pitch hire and catering.

If you are interested in taking part in any way please contact our Registration Officer Martyn Vaudin at 16 Quay Angel Gorleston Great Yarmouth NR31 6TJ for a registration form at once. His telephone contact number is (h) 01493 602945 or (m) 07786615107 or by email martyn.nml@btconnect.com and forms need to be returned no later than Saturday 15th May if your name is to be included in the special centenary programme we will be producing for the occasion.

26/05/09:The Annual General Meeting of Gorleston Hockey Club was held at ‘The Albion’ Public House on Tuesday 26th May 2009. 12 members attended with apologies received for the absence of 7 more.

Chairman's Report: Hugh Wiltshire
PLAYING SIDE - Congratulations to captain Kevin MacDonald and the Team for a successful first season in Division 3 North East of the NE14 East Mens League. GHC finished comfortably fifth with 37 points, a good performance overall. Thanks to Kevin, Martyn Vaudin and Monty Raymond in particular for getting a full side out virtually every week.
UMPIRES – Mr Wiltshire advised he would be 70 in the near future and will step down to be a secondary Umpire next season with Malcolm Berry taking over the primary Umpiring role for the Club.
THE FUTURE- the coming season is a special year for the Club, as it reaches 100 years old in May 2010. A Committee is to be arranged to agree a celebratory event to mark this milestone noting the first game ever was against Norwich Grasshoppers (now Norwich City) and it would be appropriate for them to be involved.

Captain's Report: Kev MacDonald

Kev extended his thanks to Hugh and Russ Crawford for their work behind the scenes.
The main objective (to stay in Division 3) was achieved, playing very good hockey at times. We started the season very well and then had some blips with personnel and a mix up with the HA Vase. The best result was the 5-0 demolition of Bury, also a narrow loss to Harleston.
Kev extended his thanks to Monty for finding players to try to make sure we had a full team each game.
Target for next season is to push for promotion. To do this we will need to move the ball quicker, improve our fitness levels and have a consistent squad of players.
PLAYER OF THE SEASON – the winner was Andrew Lilly and in his absence at work the Chairman made arrangements to present him with his trophy on Thursday - picture supplied
