News - Season 2007/08 - Final Position 2nd
- Promoted to League Division 3NE
13/05/08:
As
a result of Watton 1 conceding defeat 3 nil in their final
game this year Gorleston Hockey Club finished in second place
on 52 points in Division 4 North East of the NE14 East Mens
League and so gain promotion to Division 3 next season.
At the Club's Annual General Meeting held in the Albion PH
on Thursday 1st May Chairman Hugh Wiltshire congratulated
the whole team for their superb performance over the past
seven months and particularly the midfield and defence who
had conceded only 26 goals - by some distance the best in
the division. Despite several contenders the Player of the
Season Award went to Nick Mobbs as the Club's most improved
performer and special mention was made of Peter Jones as joint
top scorer with 15 goals who in March passed the 600 goal
mark for the Club.
Chairman also thanked Malcolm Berry and Jason Austin for qualifying
as umpires which would enable him to cut down on his own League
umpiring commitments next season and Jason too for going on
the appropriate course and taking up the official position
of Club Coach which was now necessary with the Club's higher
league status.
A discussion followed on the need for a 2nd X1 fixture list
for the younger members who came to training and to satisfy
some of the older ones who might now find Division 3 hockey
too high a standard. It was decided that at this stage the
Club could not commit itself to another league team but arrangements
would be made for several Sunday friendly matches of Division
6 standard from September to give these players a chance to
develop their skills and enthusiasm at an appropriate level.
In the meantime the Club will continue its association with
Loddon Ladies Club to participate in the Summer Mixed County
Hockey league and various festivals.
The election of officers took place for the coming year. Kevin
MacDonald was re-elected Club Captain along with Martyn Vaudin
his Vice. Chairman Hugh Wiltshire and Secretary Russ Crawford
also continue to manage the administration with Malcolm Berry
the new Umpire Liaison Officer.
With a reasonably healthy balance sheet thanks to sponsors
Hoose and Co HKBWiltshires and the Albion subscriptions remain
at £15 for the players £25 for non-players and
£5 Juniors. Match fees for players however will increase
by £1 to £8 per game (£7 Juniors) to include
free Tuesday night training at Cliff Park Community Pitch
from 6 to 8 pm.
The picture below shows Nick Mobbs being presented with the
Club's Player of the Season Award by Chairman Hugh Wiltshire.

Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held at ‘The
Albion’ Public House on Tuesday 3rd July 2007.
Present:John Dawson, Hugh Wiltshire, Tim
Thomas, Russ Crawford, Mark Vaudin, Martin Vaudin, Jason Austin,
Kevin Macdonald, Peter Jones, Liam Payne, Stuart Sahota
Apologies Received:Ben Goodman, Tim Mobbs,
Nick Mobbs
1. Minutes of the previous AGM
These were accepted without alteration. There were no matters
arising.
2. Chairman’s Report (Hugh Wiltshire)
On the Pitch – Congratulation to the team on finishing
5th in the League, with 43 points. The spirit of the team
was excellent in the later part of the season
Administration – Caused a few problems during the season
and culminated in Jamie standing down as Captain, citing his
reasons as; the stress of being Captain, subbing players during
games and a failure to communicate with some players. This
is something that we must look at for next season.
Umpiring – Hugh in 68 in January and cannot continue
to Umpire forever, so the Club must look for replacements.
The Club is supposed to have two qualified Umpires (NOTE:
subsequently, the League has demanded these are identified
to the HUA and we will forfeit games if using an unregistered
Umpire). A number of Players did their theory test a couple
of years ago, however these passes lapse after 18 months.
We need to have 4 or 5 players qualify as Umpires during the
coming season.
Cliff Park – The Astro is being replaced over the summer
and should be ready for 01 September 2007. All home games
have been booked for a 14:30 start.
Next Season – will be equally difficult with the teams
in the League.
3. Captain’s Report (Kev MacDonald)
Kev extended his thanks to Hugh for all his help during the
season.
The Club aimed to finish 5th in the League and achieved this.
There was a weak point in the middle of the season and the
team rallied strongly to complete a strong finish.
We will need to work on our overall level of fitness next
season and maintain the same team spirit.
4. Treasurer’s Report (Tim Thomas)
Tim Thomas presented the Receipt & Payment accounts for
the year ending 04 April 2007. Total funds in the current
account amount to £1582.00. Membership and Subscription
fees are to remain unchanged.
The meeting discussed kit that is needed for the coming season,
including a set of Goalkeepers gloves (to match the existing
kit) and a new set of shirts. Hugh will talk to HSB Wiltshire
about sponsorship and Tim will discuss sponsorship with his
business partner. Jason Austin will liaise with Tim Mobbs
about the supply of the shirts, socks and shorts. The meeting
agreed to change the Club sock colour to black, to ensure
a uniform shade was maintained.
5. Election of Officers, Consisting of:
• President: John Dawson
• Chairman: Hugh Wiltshire
• Treasurer: Tim Thomas
• Secretary: Russ Crawford
• Captain: Kevin Macdonald

Dennis
Eke
Two
weeks before the start of the new Hockey season Gorleston
HC were shocked to hear that their regular goalkeeper for
the past 3 seasons had collapsed and died while playing tennis.
57 year old Dennis Eke joined Gorleston from Norfolk Nomads
HC in 2002 when the Club were at a low point in League Division
6 NE. His knowledge of the game coupled with safe hands and
kicking ability behind a then inexperienced defence saw Gorleston
achieve promotion in his first year. As the youngsters matured
and Gorleston welcomed back Jamie Higginbotham the confidence
of Gorleston grew to such an extent that two years later they
became champions of Division 5 NE without conceding a single
League game.
Towards the end of last season Dennis aggravated a shoulder
injury but only the day before he died he was back playing
in goal in a mixed 11 friendly at Pinebanks, Norwich and was
looking forward to the season ahead.
Dennis who was a keen sportsman playing cricket and tennis
for his home village of Cringleford leaves a widow, Astra,
and one son Gavin. He will be badly missed by Gorleston HC,
his many former teammates and sporting colleagues.
Hugh Wiltshire, Chairman Gorleston HC
