Report 24/03/07: Cranes 1-4 Gorleston
Gaining complete revenge for the
3-0 defeat inflicted on them at home last December Gorleston deservedly
triumphed in their final game of the season at Ipswich to deprive
Cranes of promotion to Division 3 NE next year.
Cranes who are the league's top scorers started the game full of
confidence and with their two front-runners Andy Bristow and Craig
Bloomfield taking up good positions, the Gorleston defence marshalled
by Nick Mobbs Martin Vaudin Ben Goodman and Peter Jones had their
work cut out to minimize that threat. It was therefore no surprise
when with a quarter of the game gone the Ipswich captain Andy Bristow
turned past Martin Vaudin superbly in the circle to smash the ball
home past Barney King on the half volley.
But Cranes were not having things all their own way and throughout
the afternoon their defence lacked the speed and determination one
would have expected from the pre-season championship favourites.
Several times their goal-keeper was called into action to stop darting
runs from Russ Crawford and Tom Wiltshire and when Mark Vaudin added
his presence to the attack a few minutes later the ball fell kindly
to him and was fired first time and without ceremony into the roof
of the net.
Cranes however still pressed forward and before the interval missed
two clear chances which could well have put a different complexion
on the game. As it was Gorleston's half-time team talk worked wonders
and with Andy Bristow dropping off in an attempt to counter the
close-marking attention of Ben Goodman Gorleston stepped up a gear
and began to dominate the midfield. Their reward came after 15 minutes
when a short corner ball was slipped sideways to Adam Stone whose
mishit shot looped over Crane's sprawling keeper and into the net.
Then four minutes later another move down the right this time by
Kevan MacDonald resulted in the keeper's save rebounding to Russ
Crawford who coolly lifted the all over him to double Gorleston's
lead.
The home side's heads visibly dropped and with Gorleston now attacking
at will it was left to Peter Jones to complete their goal-keeper's
misery. From one short corner he was lucky to keep his goal intact
when Peter's shot struck the post and rebounded into play but there
was no such let-off three minutes from time as a similar shot rocketed
in off the other post. On the final whistle off came the keeper's
equipment in all directions and he disappeared off the pitch in
a fury, hopefully to calm down by next season.

Report 17/03/07: Gorleston 7-1 UEA 2nd XI
Gorleston's
final home game of the season marked a personal triumph for centre-forward
Russ Crawford who scored a double hat-trick against the hapless
Norwich students second string. With their Easter term having finished
yesterday UEA were unfortunately only able to muster nine players
for a match which had little bearing on promotion or relegation
issues but they did play with considerable spirit until Russ struck
a purple patch late in the second half which brought him four goals
in a ten minute spell.
With their numerical advantage the home side were in no mood to
suffer the indignity Felixstowe had endured last week when Gorleston
had visited them with a similar shortfall of players. However despite
Russ having opened the scoring after 3 minutes latching on to a
well placed aerial ball from Adam Stone Gorleston's game then went
off the boil and several chances at short corners and with poor
finishing went begging.
Gorleston increased their lead on 25 minutes when Russ pounced again
to deflect in another short corner but it was UEA who then took
the eye with one or two individual displays and interceptions and
they fully deserved their reward 2 minutes into the second half
when Josh Smith scored from a narrow angle.
UEA took confidence from this and for a time committed more players
forward than was wise to press for the equaliser. This however left
them exposed at the back and ten minutes later Mark Vaudin broke
swiftly down the right wing and from his cross Russ was on hand
again to restore Gorleston's two goal advantage slipping the ball
past the advancing keeper. The students heads finally dropped and
with Gorleston now in full control of the midfield and wings the
home side were able to provide almost continuous attacking positions
for Russ to exploit three more times before Martin Vaudin got in
on the act to score the seventh and final goal with a neatly struck
shot from the top of the circle.
Gorleston next Saturday visit Cranes at Ipswich for what could be
the championship decider for the opposition. This is the final game
of the season and transport leaves the Albion at 10.30 am for a
1 pm push-back.
Match
Report 10/03/07: Felixstowe 2nd XI 1-3 Gorleston
This
was an unexpected win for Gorleston who travelled to the Ipswich
Tuddenham Road sportscentre with only nine players after three early
morning call-offs. Fearing the worst against a side only two places
below them in League Division 4 the Gorleston nine produced what
was arguably their best performance of the season, planning from
the start to learn from their Bury defeat by controlling a strong
defensive display and breaking out with swift counter-attacks only
when their opponents made a mistake or exposed a weakness in their
formation.
The plan worked to perfection. With Ben Goodman and Martin Vaudin
solid at full back and the midfield quartet of Kevin MacDonald Adam
Stone Mark Vaudin and Dale Kemp dominating the midfield for long
periods, Felixstowe rarely got into dangerous positions and when
they did Barney King was there in goal to clear his lines with complete
authority.
Gorleston then got a valuable break after 20 minutes - they were
awarded a short corner which Martin Vaudin came forward to convert
in convincing fashion and this helped to increase the side's confidence
in their game plan as half-time approached.
Ten minutes after the interval Gorleston doubled their advantage.
Throughout the game their only front runners Malcolm Berry and Tom
Wiltshire had been dangerous with their darting runs but when Adam
Stone joined them in a move down the right wing to cross from the
by-line there was Malcolm two yards out to finish off clinically
in front of goal.
For a time Felixstowe raised their game and got a goal back from
a short corner - Kevin MacDonald stopped the initial shot on the
post but the ball rebounded kindly to Martin Rdwards who made no
mistake with the follow-up. But then strangely the home side's impetus
fell away and Gorleston soon restored their two goal advantage when
a similar break down the right this time by Mark Vaudin was neatly
converted by Tom Wiltshire to seal victory and what at the start
of game were three most unlikely points. No Man of the Match was
awarded this week as all nine players must take this richly deserved
plaudit.
Next week is Gorleston's last home game at Cliff Park this season
against the UEA's 2nd team. Push-back at 2.30 pm.
Match
Report 03/03/07: Gorleston 1-1 Sudbury 2nd XI
Gorleston
were delighted a snatch a last minute equaliser against their high-flying
opponents which effectively condemns both teams to another season
in League Division 4 next October. Welcoming the availability of
Andrew Lilley in defence Gorleston began the game strongly and for
the first 20 minutes were the better team going forward. Sudbury
however have a rare talent in Matt Abrey leading their forward line
and when he then broke to score with an opportunist effort, Gorleston
seemed to fall back to cover him and rarely then threatened for
long periods.
The interval came and went with Sudbury continuing to control the
midfield and it was only thanks to some superb defensive work from
Andrew and his full back partners Peter Jones and Dale Kemp that
kept Gorleston in the game. With such dominance both sides became
at times frustrated and the umpires midway through the second half
had to stop the game to ask both captains to keep their players
under control. When play resumed it was Gorleston who appeared to
have responded better and getting back to the basics of hockey pushed
forward to greater effect. In the final session their luck was rewarded
- a free hit was given to them just outside the circle and Peter
Jones came forward to strike it cleanly into the circle where Russ
Crawford got in front of his marker to deflect the ball into the
roof of the net.
Sudbury were dismayed at the loss of three valuable points and with
Gorleston and MOM Andrew Lilley celebrating they will look forward
to their game next Saturday against Felixstowe 2nd Xl at Tuddenham
Road SportsCentre Ipswich. Pushback is at the earlier time of 12
noon and transport leaves the Albion at 9.45 am.
Match
Report 24/02/07: Gorleston 3-2 UEA 3rd XI
UEA
will count themselves unlucky not to take any points out of this
game with a spirited performance. Gorleston were without midfielders
Jason Austin and Adam Stone and, with Captain Jamie Higginbotham
having unexpectedly left the Club midweek for an indefinite break
from hockey, it was left to Vice Captain Mark Vaudin and promoted
skipper Kevin MacDonald to pull the team together. In this they
were further hampered by the absence of goal-keeper Barney King
but in his place 14 year-old Chris Armstrong made a welcome return
with such maturity that several excellent saves and interceptions
were to see his awarded Man of the Match.
The game started at a frenetic pace with both sides trying to gain
control. In fact it was UEA who seemed the more threatening and
indeed they had the ball in the net after 10 minutes only to find
the umpire's whistle had gone moments before for third man obstruction
on a defender. Then Peter Jones settled the Gorleston nerves with
a well-taken short corner goal and the game evened out with frequent
chances at either end. UEA equalised after 23 minutes Phil Beer
scoring a magnificent goal after an individual run from the half-way
line left 3 or 4 defenders in his wake.
The second half largely repeated the pattern of play after a great
start by Gorleston. First another short corner was awarded 2 minutes
in and again Peter Jones took control this time to strike the ball
home through the keeper's legs. Then a few moments later came the
vital third goal and once more Peter Jones was the catalyst - bursting
into the circle on the right his fierce first time shot beat the
keeper only to strike the cross-bar and rebound into play where
Tom Wiltshire was alert enough to finish off clinically.
UEA were not by any means finished and continued to make life difficult
for the Gorleston defence. They deservedly got a goal back after
17 minutes while Gorleston were reduced to 10 men with Mark Vaudin
in the sin-bin for dissent. This time it was Matt Lang who converted
a rebound off Chris Armstrong's pads. Then it was all action from
the students during the final stages as they pressed for an equaliser
but Chris and his defensive cover of Dale Kemp Peter Jones and Martin
Vaudin were equal to the task of keeping their goal intact and completing
the double over their more youthful opponents.
With all the top four teams above them in Division 4 NE gaining
maximum points this victory consolidates Gorleston' fifth spot in
the league but next week's opponents third placed Sudbury should
be a much tougher proposition. This is another home game at Cliff
Park with a 2.30 pm pushback.
Match
Report 17/02/07: Bury 3rd XI 2-1 Gorleston
Gorleston
were bitterly disappointed to have to travel to Bury with only 9
men after late call-offs and holiday/work commitments. Having beaten
the hosts comprehensively at home earlier in the season Gorleston
knew they had the better skills but with two extra players and a
good team plan to spread the ball wide Bury eventually used this
advantage to good effect.
Gorleston actually started the game three short as one of the transporting
cars took a wrong turn outside town and arrived ten minutes late.
But once they took the field Gorleston pressed forward and after
15 minutes took the lead when Malcolm Berry converted a well placed
cross from Adam Stone. That lead unfortunately did not last long
and six minutes later Bury equalized from a defensive error. Following
the ball going out of play a quickly taken hit from the base line
was intercepted by a forward who fired goalwards. His initial shot
was saved by Barney King but the ball fell kindly to Bury skipper
Paul Lawrence whose mishit reply trickled into the far corner of
the goal with Barney scrambling to cut it out.
Disappointed Gorleston regrouped but seemed unable to raise the
tempo. Without the width usually given by Kevin MacDonald and the
steel in defence of Jason Austin, both Mark Vaudin and Jamie Higginbotham
were forced into defensive roles and the team's attacks were few
and far between. Using their extra men it was no surprise when Bury
took the lead twelve minutes into the second half again with an
element of good fortune - this time it was Paul Rake whose shot
on goal took a deflection giving Barney no chance.
Gorleston still had their opportunity to get back into the game
and one shot from Adam Stone deserved better than to whistle past
the far post. But it was not to be and Gorleston must be grateful
that other surprising results this weekend have kept the lead group
in Division 4 NE still well within challenging range.
Gorleston now have two home games on the trot and next Saturday
entertain the UEA 3rd team at Cliff Park. Push-back is again 1 pm
and a win is vital to restart the league campaign.
Match
Report 10/02/07: Gorleston 1-3 Norwich Union 3rd XI
This
was a vital game for Gorleston to win and with defeat probably goes
their last chance for promotion this season. Despite fielding a
strong team Gorleston never really got going until the second half
and by then the game was beyond their reach.
Played in steady drizzle Gorleston's first half performance was
disappointing and they seemed unable to match the visitors better
organization and eye for opportunities. Penned back in defence for
much of the opening quarter Norwich Union's first goal was typical
- a break down the right wing was covered but when the cross came
Colin Birch nipped in front of his marker to give Barney King in
goal no chance at close range.
Still the Gorleston forward line were unable to make an impression
and tempers flared briefly before half-time when the visitors were
awarded a second goal. A shot from outside the circle appeared to
go through a crowd of players untouched into the net but the second
umpire on the far touchline insisted Union's Richard Draeger had
got a deflection on the ball inside and after a lengthy conference
with his colleague a goal was awarded.
Immediately after the interval the visitors struck again with their
best and the decisive goal. Cley Hamilton made a darting run into
the Gorleston circle beating his two markers and although he appeared
to have taken the ball wide of the goal his reverse stick shot was
too quick and accurate for Barney to deal with.
It was only then that Gorleston seemed to come to life playing with
the style and freedom of they are well capable. The catalyst was
a well-taken short corner goal which Jamie Higginbotham flashed
into the top corner of the visitors net and for the rest of the
game the ball rarely left their half. But Norwich Union are not
the sort of team to buckle under pressure and a well drilled defensive
display saw them hold out for the three points which keep them third
in the Division 4 NE League table with a game in hand and a real
opportunity for promotion themselves. Gorleston now drop to fifth
place.
Next week Gorleston travel to Bury for another difficult game. Pushback
is at 12 noon on the astropitch at the Beetons Way Leisure Centre
and transport will leave the Albion at 9.45 am.
Match
Report 03/02/07: Holt 0-2 Gorleston
Gorleston
travelled to North Norfolk to play Holt in their latest league game
with an early evening pushback under floodlights. With a depleted
squad Gorleston had to call on 14 year old Chris Anderson as reserve
goal-keeper who coped extremely well with the limited opportunities
that came his way.
With only 9 outfield players and Holt desperate for points Gorleston
knew the game was going to be tough and so from the start employed
a strong defensive system relying on swift counter attacks by their
speedy frontsmen Russ Crawford and Mark Vaudin. This tactic took
a while to prove itself but once they had settled in there were
outstanding performances from Jason Austin and Dale Kemp in defence
and Holt found no way to get any powerful shots on goal.
Then after 15 minutes Mark Vaudin was able to break with one of
his mazy runs and he finished it clinically with a reverse struck
shot which beat the Holt keeper from a narrow angle. At once Gorleston's
confidence was boosted and with Liam Payne moving forward freely
Gorleston were able to press hard for a second goal. It came slightly
fortuitously - Mark was able to gain the ball in a good position
and cross to Jamie Higginbotham who was initially covered by a defender.
However in the resulting tackle the rebound fell kindly for Jamie
who broke clear and lifted the ball over the stranded keeper at
the second attempt. Protests by Holt to their umpire that the ball
had hit Jamie's foot fell on deaf ears and the goal stood.
The second half saw Gorleston change the line-up with injury to
Mark Vaudin which left him a passenger up front. However Gorleston's
defensive tactics worked a treat and with Martin Vaudin now controlling
the midfield Gorleston were content to play out the game as a practice
match. The disappointing aspect must be the set piece corners none
of which Gorleston were able to convert particularly as the other
top teams all had convincing wins which see Gorleston now drop to
fourth in the League on goal difference.
Next Saturday Gorleston play third placed Norwich Union also on
30 points at the Cliff Park Community Pitch at 1pm and a win is
vital if the home side are to push for promotion.
Match
Report 27/01/07: Gorleston 4-1 Watton
Gorleston,
after the previous week's upset, were looking to get back to winning
ways and this win sees them third in the East Mens Hockey League
Div 4NE, three points off the leaders.
With a full strength squad to choose from Gorleston were able to
field their best Xl to start the game. This paid dividends straight
from the off as Mark Vaudin made valuable yards down the right wing
before finding the returning Jamie Higginbotham in the centre. His
pinpoint cross saw Russ Crawford sneaking in front of his marker
to slip the ball past the Watton keeper and give Gorleston the lead.
Gorleston dominated the midfield with some hard tackling from Adam
Stone and Martin Vaudin. But although they were winning the battle,
the possession was not being turned into goals.
The introduction of Liam Payne resulted in Mark Vaudin finding more
time and space on the right and his cross was converted by Jamie
Higginbotham with a swept shot to give Gorleston a two goal cushion
and finish the half strongly.
Gorleston in complete control found it time to introduce Tom Wiltshire
and another attack saw him finish the move with a well struck shot
through acrowd of players to maintain Gorleston's momentum.
Gorleston still pushing hard saw their defence called into action
but some fantastic last ditch defending from Jason Austin and Thomas
Woodrow left their keeper with little to do.Gorleston then found
the Watton defence were pushing very far up the pitch and were able
to exploit this when Higginbotham dropped deep to pick up the ball.
He slipped it through the middle of the visitors defence to Adam
Stone and with only the keeper to beat he rounded him to slot the
ball home and virtually kill off the game. With only a minute or
so left on the clock the visiting umpire gave a short corner for
what looked like an innocuous challenge and then upgraded it to
a penalty flick and sent Jason Austin to the sin bin. On the third
attempt Watton converted the flick for a consolation goal.
Gorleston can take heart that they controlled the game from start
to finish and have now put themselves into a fantastic position
for promotion this year.
Match
Report 20/01/07: Norwich City 3rd XI 1-0 Gorleston
Two
disputed umpiring decisions cost Gorleston dear in this match as
the League season resumed after the Christmas break. Already facing
stiff opposition from a Norwich City side who had beaten them last
September at home, Gorleston's cause was not helped by the absence
of their captain Jamie Higginbotham who it transpired had broken
a bone in his hand from the flying stick injury sustained against
Norfolk Nomads 2 weeks ago and will consequently be out of action
for a few weeks yet. Nevertheless Gorleston were still able to field
a strong side with Russ Crawford and Tom Wiltshire back from injury
and to return home pointless from the game was hardly deserved.
on the strength of this performance.
Norwich started brightly and put pressure on Gorleston with four
successive short corners which were well defended. But with Russ
and Mark Vaudin using their speed to harry the home defence and
Adam Stone and Martin Vaudin backing up well midfield play soon
flowed from end to end as both sides sought the vital breakthrough.
It came after 20 minutes with what proved to be the winning goal.
Norwich forced their way into the Gorleston circle and the ball
was adjudged to have struck Jason Austin on the foot. Despite protests
the short corner was taken and Guy Marchant slipped his cover to
strike the ball firmly past Barny King and into the net.
Gorleston reacted strongly with annoyance and raised their game.
They were unlucky not to equalize almost immediately as a fierce
shot from Mark Vaudin rattled the crossbar and with Tom Wiltshire
taking the field at half time it seemed only a matter of time before
they scored. With Norwich falling back in defence the game continued
largely as one way traffic towards the Norwich goal particularly
as Kevin MacDonald was allowed to come forward with some well-timed
runs and crosses from the right wing on which Wiltshire and Crawford
were unable to capitalize. Several free hits and short corners were
awarded to them but a combination of near misses and superb goal-keeping
kept the ball out of the net apart from one clear umpiring error.
A well-worked short corner variation between Adam Stone and Martin
Vaudin was deflected off a defender's foot wide of the goal and
the whistle blew for a retake. The umpire however had failed to
note Mark Vaudin lurking at the far post who an instant later had
slipped the ball home There was still time and enough chances for
Gorleston to win the game but Norwich to their own delight hung
to complete the double and move up to fourth in the Division 4 East
League table one point ahead of Gorleston.
Gorleston next week entertain Watton on the Cliff Park Community
pitch with a 1 pm pushback and if they can return to winning form
have their own chance to complete a league double.

Report 06/01/07: Norfolk Nomads 1st XI 1-8 Gorleston 1st XI
With
rain falling throughout the game it was a wretched afternoon for
playing hockey but a wonderful tonic for Gorleston who returned
from their Christmas break and HA Cup defeat firing on all cylinders.
With Ben Goodman pulling out in the warm-up to protect an earlier
injury Gorleston in fact played with 10 men but it was difficult
to spot the difference this made as their superior speed and skills
dominated .their lower East League opponents.
After an evenly matched opening spell the game sprang to life with
three quickly taken goals two poached by Jamie Higginbotham from
crosses by Mark Vaudin and Adam Stone and a third an individual
effort from Liam Payne. Then Adam Stone converted a penalty for
an illegal foot stop on the line shortly before half-time and the
match was virtually over as a contest.
Despite appalling conditions the second half was played in festive
spirit by both sides with frequent stops for injuries as players
began to feel the pace after the three week lay-off. But Gorleston
were always in control and after fifteen minutes Martin Vaudin crossed
to set up Jamie's hat trick before scoring twice himself. At this
point in temporary absences from the field by two more Gorleston
players Nomads broke away to collect a consolation goal but not
to be out-done Adam Stone then burst through the home side's defence
to complete their eight goal humiliation.
It was a fine performance from Gorleston for whom apart from the
goal scorers Nick Mobbs and John Tadross showed some excellent touches.

First
Round : Gainsborough Rose 1st Xl 13-1 Gorleston Gophers 1st Xl
For
the first time in their long history Gorleston entered a team in
English Hockey's national Vase Competition and were rewarded with
an away game at Lincoln University against the North Division's
League 1 side Gainsborough Rose. Their hospitable hosts who run
a total of six men's sides and were last year's beaten Vase semi-finalists
to the eventual winners Liverpool Sefton, made no concession to
Gorleston's lower League status and turned out with their first
team to give a master-class in clinical hockey and a lesson on ruthless
finishing.
It was unfortunate that the Gorleston were not at full strength
and to make up the team had to call on their normal umpire Hugh
Wiltshire to play along with three regulars who were less than fully
fit. No-one however least of all the spectators who braved the cold
conditions expected the whirlwind start made by Gainsborough who
converted four short corners in the first ten minutes to set the
tone of the game.
Despite the home side's dominance Gorleston can take encouragement
from strong performances by defenders Jamie Higginbotham Mark and
Martin Vaudin Kevin MacDonald and Andrew Lilly all of whom showed
touches of individual skill which were the equal of any of the Gainsborough
players. But it was the latter's speed and control that Gorleston
had no answer for and almost every attack into GG's circle saw a
switch in play which found other players unmarked and ready to shoot.
Trailing 7 goals to nil at the interval Gorleston battled away and
with aggravated injuries to Tom Wiltshire Ben Goodman and Liam Payne
could make little impression in attack in the second half. The result
was a torrid afternoon's work for Barney King in goal who seemingly
found more to do in than the rest of his season put together. And
this included saving a penalty before on the stroke of full time
Jamie Higginbotham converted his consolation chance to the wild
enjoyment of the crowd and the rest of his team-mates.
To cap the day the GG's minibus broke down on the return rain-soaked
trip and the team had to be rescued by the RAC and a trio of taxis
- not bad enough however to spoil everyone's enjoyment of the unique
occasion.

Match
Report 02/12/06: Gorleston 5-1 Harleston 5th XI
Gorleston
returned to winning form in League Division 4 North East with the
comprehensive defeat of Harleston's 5th team. The Magpies have been
suffering of late from lack of players and although they were strengthened
by the addition of 5 members of their veteran's squad whose morning
match against Bishop's Stortford had been conceded they were no
match on the day for Gorleston whose performance fully justified
their high league position.
The surprise was it took so long for Gorleston to get going. Captain
Jamie Higginbotham playing up front in the continued absence of
the injured Russ Crawford and Tom Wiltshire spurned several chances
before Harleston's veteran John Wells showed him how to score. Picking
up the ball midfield Wells ran at the defence and with Gorleston
backing off fired in an excellent strike from the top of the D.
This spurred Gorleston into action and within five minutes they
had taken the lead as Jamie finished off smartly two short corner
variations. Then shortly before the interval he completed his hat-trick
converting a right wing cross following more work by Man of the
Match Mark Vaudin.
Early in the second half one of the Harleston players was accidentally
struck on the head by a deflected shot in the gathering gloom. He
was taken to hospital for stitches and once the match resumed under
floodlights the visitors game appeared to fall apart. Gorleston
attacked at will and it was not long before Jamie scored again.
Then after 15 minutes in trying to prevent Liam Payne scoring Gorleston's
fifth goal the Harleston goal-keeper tore a ham-string and could
not continue. With no reserve keeper and no-one prepared to take
don his gear the visitors had a discussion and with Gorleston's
approval conceded the victory.
From 1st January 2007 new HA rules come in allowing a team option
to have eleven field players and no goal-keeper. Unfortunately this
change comes too late for Harleston who had little chance to salvage
any points in this match.
This completes the first half of Gorleston's league season and they
are to be congratulated to go into the winter break in second spot.
Next week's game is a friendly against Norwich Union 4th team at
Pinebanks at 12.45pm. Transport is from the Albion at 11.30am
Match
Report 02/12/06: Gorleston 0-3 Ipswich Cranes
Gorleston
retained second spot in East League Division 4 North East after
this top of the table clash with Cranes but the honours belong to
the visitors for a convincing 3 goal victory. Missing Adam Stone
and Andrew Lilly through other commitments and still short up front
with Tom Wiltshire injured Cranes took full advantage to extend
their table lead to 5 points and on this performance they will take
some catching by anybody.
The Community pitch at Cliff Park is to be congratulated on its
new Sports Hall and changing facilities but unfortunately recent
flooding has covered parts of the astro-pitch with mud. The result
was both sides had to reign back their usual pacey skills - even
so there a number of nasty falls which had the umpires calling for
time out and calm tempers.
Crane took the lead after 20 minutes slightly fortuitously. A shot
in the circle appeared adequately covered by the defenders but Aiden
Bloomfield nipped ahead of Barney King to deflect the ball on the
reverse and into the net. Then shortly before half-time the Cranes
Captain Andy Bristow whose partnership with Aiden this season has
been key to his side's success pounced on another poor clearance
to extend a lead they never looked like losing.
Gorleston regrouped at the interval but a killer blow was struck
shortly afterwards. Breaking down the right wing Russ Crawford pulled
up the a torn hamstring which will no doubt see him out of action
for some weeks. Seriously depleted now in attack Gorleston continued
to battle gamely midfield but the league leader's were comfortable
and a third goal in the final minute by Andy Bristow again was no
more than they deserved.
Next weekend is going to be tough for Gorleston. On Saturday the
visitors to Cliff Park are Harleston Magpies 5th Xl and the home
side must get back in the points. Then on Sunday the team travels
to Lincoln in the first round of the HA Vase at 1 pm. Their opponents
are the Division One North side Gainsborough whose team last year
were the Trophy semi-finalists. This is the first time Gorleston
have entered this Competition and it will be interesting to see
if they can cope as potential giant-killers.

Report 25/11/06: UEA 2nd XI 0-2 Gorleston
For
the second time this month Gorleston travelled to the University's
Sportspark in Norwich and came away with 3 league points this time
at the expense of the UEA's first string in Division 4 North East.
Missing Jason Austin from the midfield and the injured Tom Wiltshire
up front the match was as expected much more even than of late and
the undoubted star was Barney King in the Gorleston goal who made
several fine saves to thwart the students attack and earn his Man
of the Match award.
The game itself was won by Mark Vaudin with two trademark strikes.
Arriving late from work his substitution after 20 minutes brought
its almost immediate reward with Mark first sweeping home a quickly
taken free hit awarded to Gorleston from just outside the circle.
Then 2 minutes into the second half he was again on hand to finish
off one of many short corner variations which Gorleston have been
practising hard this season to perfect.
With the points seemingly secure the match after that was an evenly
fought affair but still with sufficient chances coming regularly
at both ends for both goal-keepers to show their skills. One overhead
deflected save by the UEA keeper particularly caught the eye but
Barney King will be the happier not only preserving his clean score
sheet but also for getting in plenty of practice ahead of the game
next Saturday against league leaders Ipswich Cranes 1st Xl. Pushback
for this at Cliff Park Community Pitch is 2.30 pm

Report 18/11/06: Gorleston 6-0 Felixstowe 2nd XI
After
last week's disappointment at Sudbury Gorleston bounced back in
convincing fashion to beat Felixstowe's second string at home on
the Cliff Park Community Pitch. Gorleston's success which takes
them back up to third place in League Division 4 NE was largely
built on a much improved defensive performance marshalled by Man
of the Match Jason Austin. With good support from Tom Woodrow and
Kevin McDonald and with Andrew Lilly and Martin Vaudin unruffled
midfield this gave the visitors forward line few chances to mount
any serious challenges to Barney King in goal.
The result was more time and space for the Gorleston forwards to
show their skills and with a return of a goal-scoring touch the
Felixstowe defence was soon under pressure and showing their frustration.
Mark Vaudin who had an excellent game opened the scoring after 12
minutes - picking up a loose ball in the circle he fired home a
fierce shot through a ruck of players. A few minutes later centre-forward
Tom Wiltshire pulled his markers wide to the right before crossing
for a stretching Malcolm Berry to deflect the ball past the keeper.
Two more goals before half-time from Mark Vaudin and Russ Crawford
gave Gorleston a comfortable cushion and afterwards they were able
to bring on their substitutes to maintain match fitness and show
their skills.
Felixstowe's mid-table league position is clearly not unmerited
but on the day they were simply out-classed. It was therefore not
unexpected when in the last quarter of the match two more goals
resulted from well-worked moves - first Malcolm Berry was picked
out unmarked on the far post to slot home and two minutes from the
end there was skipper Jamie Higginbotham forsaking his defensive
duties for once to appear in the circle to get his name on the score-sheet.
Next week Gorleston travel to Norwich for their league game against
UEA 2nd Xl with push-back at 2.30 pm. Transport from the Albion
PH at 12.45.

Report 11/11/06: Sudbury 2nd XI 2-1 Gorleston
Neutral
spectators were treated to a fine game of hockey from both sides
but Gorleston were bitterly disappointed to travel back from Suffolk
without any league points to show for their good performance. With
a strong squad available Gorleston started the better and from their
first short corner Jamie Higginbotham drag-flicked a shot powerfully
into the roof of the net. But the hosts were not to be discouraged
and from a short corner of their own after 20 minutes Nick Knight
slipped the ball past his defensive cover and then struck the equaliser
under Barney King in the Gorleston goal.
Thereafter the play flowed from end to end with both side's forwards
unable to break through some strong defences. Gorleston certainly
seemed to be the more dominant but were unable to take further advantage
of a higher short corner count. It was probably predictable therefore
that the winning goal should come in open play midway through the
second half from a breakaway by Sudbury's Ashley Toy - running at
speed from the half-way line he kept the ball well under control
and beat at least two defenders before slipping the ball past Barney
King. Thereafter Sudbury defended in depth and although Gorleston
struck the post and had the ball in the net on two further occasions
it was not to be their day. The players Man of the Match was awarded
to Jason Austin for a commanding game at centre half.
Next week Gorleston entertain Felixstowe 2nd Xl at Cliff Park Community
Pitch with push-back at the later time of 4 pm
Match
Report 04/11/06: UEA 3rd XI 0-4 Gorleston
Gorleston
maintained their third place position in League Division 4 North
East with another convincing win at the University's Sportspark.
They opened the scoring rather fortuitously after seven minutes
when a Russ Crawford cross in the circle was deflected by a defender
past his own goal-keeper but there was no luck about the second
goal 20 minutes later when Mark Vaudin fired home following a good
move.
It was Gorleston at this stage making all the running with some
slick passing and plenty of movement off the ball - Martin Vaudin
particularly catching the eye with some fine defensive work which
was to earn him later the man of the match award. It was also pleasing
to see Ben Goodman back for his first full game after recovering
from pre-season injury.
Gorleston have scored well this year from short corners and in this
game they showed plenty of variation in these to keep the student
defenders guessing. Gorleston's third goal however was not one they
planned - Tom Wiltshire mishit his push-in completely but Jason
Austin reacted quickest to collect the ball and tuck it home from
a narrow angle.
After the interval UEA rallied to play much better defensively but
their tackling was never in the same class as Gorleston and was
frequently penalised for obstruction. In the end UEA's Alex Barton
was yellow-carded for persistent fouling and in his absence Malcolm
Berry scored an excellent fourth goal in open play to seal victory.
Next week Gorleston travel to Sudbury for a difficult game against
the Town's 2nd Xl at Great Cornard Sports Centre 2.30 pm. Transport
from the Albion PH at 11.30 am

Report 28/10/06: Gorleston 7-0 Bury 3rd XI
After
last week's away defeat at the hands of league leaders Norwich Union
3rd Xl Gorleston returned to winning ways with a convincing 7 nil
defeat of bottom of the table side Bury on the Cliff Park Community
astropitch. With a full squad of players available for selection
Gorleston attacked fluently and with width from the push-back and
three goals in the first eight minutes virtually finished the game
as a contest. Tom Wiltshire opened the scoring after two minutes
converting a right wing cross from Mark Vaudin and then repeated
the move two minutes later with this time his striker partner Russ
Crawford as the provider.
Russ got his own name on the scoresheet for the third before Liam
Payne added a fourth -then before half-time Russ scored his second
and Gorleston's fifth to put the result beyond any doubt. The goal
of the match came eleven minutes into the second half with Adam
Stone drifting down the right and into the circle past several bemused
defenders before drawing the goal-keeper and crossing for Malcolm
Berry to score the simplest of tap-ins. Martin Vaudin got the seventh
and final goal following another skilful forward run - his first
shot was well saved by the keeper but Martin gave him no chance
with the rebound.
Gorleston are now back up the League Division 4 NE table in third
spot and next week travel to Norwich for their game against UEA
3rd Xl at 4pm. Those requiring transport meet at the Albion at 2.45.

Report 21/10/06: Norwich Union 3rd XI 2-0 Gorleston
This
match between the top two teams in Division 4 North East was an
excellent game to watch. No quarter was given and both sides produced
fast skilful hockey of the highest order befitting their respective
positions. League leaders Norwich won because of a better first
half performance with two goals both of which had an element of
luck - for the first on 25 minutes a deflected shot from Wolf deceived
stand-in keeper Malcolm Berry who otherwise had an excellent game.
Then just before half-time another strike by Wolf was going wide
of goal but Cross pursued at speed to turn the ball in at the far
post.
The second half saw the arrival and introduction of Mark Vaudin
and his darting forward runs had an immediate impact on the game.
The Norwich midfield who up to that point had dealt comfortably
with Gorleston's limited attacks retreated and Gorleston had much
more of the play. With useful performances from Jason Austin and
Adam Stone the visitors tried hard break back and Mark will be disappointed
that did not do better with one particular clear run on goal. But
it was not to be Gorleston's day and Norwich ran out winners to
consolidate their unbeaten run.
Next week Gorleston entertain Bury 3rd Xl at Cliff Park Community
Pitch at 2.30 pm hopefully to return to winning ways.

Report 14/10/06: Gorleston 4-0 Holt Harlequins 1st XI
Gorleston's
recent good form continued with a convincing victory over Holt Harlequins
at Cliff Park Community Pitch on Saturday to move up to second place
in League Division 4 North East. Gorleston had the edge in the early
stages with a number of shots which the Holt keeper did well to
keep out but once Jamie Higginbotham had opened the scoring midway
through the first half from a rebound off his pads it seemed likely
there would be more goals to come.
The visitors held out until half-time but once Peter Jones scored
the second from a well taken short corner five minutes later Holt's
confidence ebbed away and the Gorleston forwards dominated. The
third goal came when Malcolm Berry put away Russ Crawford for a
solo run on goal and shortly afterwards Martin Vaudin cracked home
a second short corner following an infringement as Holt desperately
tried to clear their lines.
Next week Gorleston travel to Pinebanks to meet the unbeaten league
leaders Norwich Union 3rd Xl at 11 am. Unfortunately the early start
has created problems with team selection but if a performance like
this could be repeated Gorleston just might be setting the target
for another excellent season.
Match
Report 07/10/06: Watton 2-4 Gorleston
Marking
the return of Tom Wiltshire Jason Austin and Nick Mobbs to the side
Gorleston put last week's woeful performance behind them and ran
out confortable winners on the astro-turf at Watton Sports Centre.
Gorleston were quickly into their stride when after only 3 minutes
Tom Wiltshire got in front of his defender to turn in a useful right
wing cross and things got even better ten minutes later when Jamie
Higginbotham struck home one of his trade-mark short corners. Then
came a Watton goal out of nothing - a long hopeful clearance upfield
was barely touched by the home side's centre-forward in the circle
and Jamie running back to cover at first unsighted Barney King in
goal and then with a last despairing lunge could only help the ball
over the goal line.
Gorleston however were playing well enough not to let this reverse
affect them and shortly before the interval Mark Vaudin restored
their 2 goal advantage. Picking the ball up on the half-way line
he jinked his way through several tackles and with the Watton defence
in disarray hit an unstoppable shot from the edge of the circle
into the roof of the net. Undoubtedly one the goal's of the season.
With Russ Crawford and Kevan McDonald also turning in useful performances
Gorleston's dominance continued after the interval and Tom Wiltshire
slotted a second goal before narrowly missing a hat-trick chance.
It was Watton however who had the final say - on the stroke of full
time they were awarded a penalty corner which their Captain Moss
Evans converted at the second attempt.
After 3 League games Gorleston lie third in the table and welcome
visitors Holt 1st Xl on Saturday to the Cliff Park Community Pitch
push-back at 2.30 pm.
Match
report 30/09/06: Gorleston 2-4 Norwich CIty 3rd XI
With
six players missing from the team which soundly beat Harleston Magpies
5th Xl the previous week Gorleston turned in a disappointing performance
against one of the sides fancied for promotion this year. Norwich
City arrived without an umpire and were forced to press-gang unqualified
players into the position. The result was a game in which too many
decisions were queried by the sides leading ultimately to both captains
being yellow carded for failing to keep their teams under control.
The game itself from Gorleston's point of view is best forgotten.
There was no width to their play and too often long hopeful hits
upfield were intercepted by the City defence who then counter-attacked
with young Anton Strauss particularly catching the eye with his
speed and skill. City took the lead after only six minutes when
their centre-forward hit home through a crowded circle and although
Jamie Higginbotham equalised with a short corner strike five minutes
later that was as good as it got for the home side. Strauss deservedly
scored shortly before the interval and afterwards two further goals
from the visitors gave them a commanding lead. Ten minutes from
the end hope flickered when Jamie struck home his second short corner
but then came a row between two players over a disputed umpiring
decision and the final whistle fortunately brought proceedings to
an end as the both Captains headed for the sin-bin.
Next week Gorleston travel in the league to newcomers Watton. Push-back
is at 2.30 pm and transport from the Albion at 12 noon.
Match
report 23/09/06: Harleston Magpies 5th XI 0-4 Gorleston
Gorleston's
league season got off to the best possible start with a convincing
victory on the home side's water-based astro pitch at Weybread.
Although Harleston have been struggling this year to fill all their
seven team squads it was Gorleston who produced the skill in this
encounter and taking up where they left off last week tore into
the opposition with two goals in the first ten minutes. First Tom
Wiltshire was on hand after ninety seconds to finish off a smart
move and although he was then promptly booked for a rash challenge
the midfield control exercised by Mark and Martin Vaudin and Adam
Stone kept the home side constantly under pressure.
Captain
Jamie Higginbotham added the second goal before Martin Vaudin put
the result beyond doubt with a fine individual effort. There was
then still time before the interval for Jamie to score his second
from a well rehearsed short corner routine.
With
such a commanding lead Gorleston were in cruise control after the
break and Jamie was able to roll on all his four substitutes at
regular intervals to good effect. No more goals came but that was
largely thanks to a fine display by the Harleston goal-keeper in
sharp contrast to Gorleston's Barney King who for the first time
this reporter can recall never once touched the ball.
Next
week Norwich City 3rd Xl will be the visitors to the Cliff Park
Community pitch at Gorleston with a 2.30 pm start.

Match
report 16/09/06: Gorleston 6-0 Norfolk Nomads
Gorleston
completed their pre-season friendly games by demolishing Norfolk
Nomads from the East League Division below them six goals without
reply. With the addition of 15 year old Nick Mobbs to the squad
and the welcome return of former Club player Kevan MacDonald for
the first time Gorleston's Captain Jamie Higginbotham had four rolling
substitutes to call on from the bench and was able to subject the
opposition to the same pressure as Norwich City had put his side
under the previous week. Gorleston dominated from the outset and
their neat interplay meant most of the game was played in the visitor's
half. Norfolk Nomads battled gamely for the first 30 minutes but
once Jamie had himself opened the scoring by beating the goal-keeper
at the near post there seemed no doubt that the floodgates were
likely to open.
So it proved after the interval - first Tom Wiltshire tucked home
a right cross on the far post before Michael Tadross dribbled his
way twice through a packed defence to score the two best goals of
the match. In the hot afternoon Nomads were by then calling for
the final whistle but there was still time for two more impressive
strikes from Martin Vaudin and Jamie Higginbotham to round off a
very satisfactory performance.
The pleasing aspect was the way Gorleston kept their shape and fitness
and throughout the game continued to build up moves patiently out
of defence. Barney King in goal dealt efficiently with the few shots
from the visitors on target and there were neat touches from Nick
Mobbs on the left wing backed by a solid performance from the players
Man of the Match Kevan MacDonald. Roll on the League and Harleston
Magpies next week.
Match
report 09/09/06: Norwich City 2nd XI 3-0 Gorleston
In
their second pre-season friendly game at Taverham Gorleston sadly
underperformed against a Norwich City side who controlled most of
the game. Despite the welcome return of their Captain Jamie Higginbotham
and missing only 3 regular players Gorleston's lack of match fitness
clearly showed and the defence had a difficult time coping with
their fast and skillful opponents from Division 3 East League.
The first goal came after only 10 minutes when the Norwich centre-forward
neatly wrong footed Stuart Sahota deputising in goal for Barney
King and before the interval the hosts were two ahead when a short
corner was not properly cleared. In the second half the Gorleston
goal was under constant siege and only brave performances from Dale
Kemp John Tadross and Stuart Sahota restricted Norwich to a third
goal shortly before the final whistle. Lessons however should be
learned from this encounter to serve Gorleston well in the League
season ahead. Players MOM was Stuart Sahota.
Match
report 02/09/06: Gorleston 1-2 Norwich City 3rd XI
In
the absence of four regular players this friendly match provided
an encouraging start to the new hockey season. After the teams had
observed a minute's silence in memory of goal-keeper Dennis Eke
who died last month Gorleston had much the better of the first half
and their interval lead following a neat move between the Tadross
brothers finished off clinically by Tom Wiltshire was no more than
they deserved.
In the second half Norwich City stepped up a gear and with several
fit youngsters and a defence well martialled by ex-County player
Alistair Wardale Gorleston increasingly came under pressure. New
keeper Barney King showed his potential with some fine athletic
saves but as some of the older players tired he found himself isolated
on two occasions and that was enough to seal victory for the opposition
in the dying minutes of the game.
Both sides meet again in four week's time and with the return of
the senior players and League points at stake it promises an interesting
rematch.
